Dave Boertman is one of the most renowned names in sportsman drag racing history, winning 5 NHRA World Championships, 17 NHRA event titles, 5 Division Championships, and 15 IHRA titles. With all his early success in NHRA Division 3, Dave caught the attention of Gil Kirk who owned the Rod Shop and was forming a new race team with the Dodge Division of Chrysler. Dave was added to the roster and in his first year with the team he won the NHRA World Championship in Stock Eliminator. Dave won the Championship again in 1972, and in 1977 he won the Championship again with his Super Stock 1971 Challenger R/T.
Rod Shop is one of the most recognizable and iconic drag race teams in the history of the sport. Gil Kirk opened the Rod Shop performance engine shops in the mid sixties, and teamed up with Jim Thompson to sponsor many of the local racers in the Columbus Ohio area. In 1971 Gil negotiated a major sponsorship with the Chrysler Corporation, and with that backing, the Rod Shop would field a major team of Dodge drag cars in almost every category in drag racing. The Rod Shop Dodge paint scheme was always a fan favorite, and still is to this day.
